Halloween: The Game Beginner's Guide — HUD, Perks & Escapes
Everything Halloween: The Game doesn't tell you: reading the HUD, stalking and bloodthirst tiers, the civilian rescue loop, escape types, items and perks.
This guide collects the mechanics Halloween: The Game never explains outright, for both sides of the match.
Play the story first
Michael's single-player campaign (a prologue plus five chapters, under two hours) introduces stalking, shape jump, executions, phone lines, power boxes and bloodthirst one piece at a time. Even civilian mains benefit — it's the fastest way to learn the killer's toolkit you'll be running from.
Reading the HUD (Michael)
| HUD element | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Three golden dots (top left) | The special targets — key civilians worth the most points. Always NPCs. Prioritize them |
| Middle dots (blue) | Regular civilians worth fewer points |
| Right dots | The 4 player-controlled survivors |
| Yellow pillars / beams | Mark where special targets are (shape jump highlights them) |
| Golden noise pings | Noise made by a main target — chase these first |
| Bloodthirst meter (bottom left) | Three tiers: higher tiers mean more damage dealt, less taken, and access to bloodthirst executions |
Michael: core loop
- Stalk victims (middle mouse; hold right-click to zoom — it makes stalking much faster). Stock has three levels; level 3 weakens the victim and makes kills easier.
- Look for context executions — kitchens, bathrooms, poles, graves and windows all allow environmental kills worth more bloodthirst and XP than plain attacks.
- Use shape jump (Q) only in darkness and out of line of sight — you can pass through unlit doors and reappear behind targets. Blackout (Ctrl+F) kills nearby lights first, and knocks riders off bikes.
- Manage bloodthirst: it drops when you stand in light, take damage, or get knocked down. At tier 3 you're extremely hard to stop.
- Cut phone lines before victims call the police, and break radios (breaking forces survivors to spend a repair kit to restore them).
- Watch the detainment meter — authority figures with flashlights fill it; at three stars you can be detained if enough cops or a Loomis pile onto you downed. It's rare, but avoid open fights and keep to the dark.
- Use the spawn ability behind targets, and the reality tear grab (a number-sequence mini-game — practice the order). Leaving a victim at 99 stock baits the hold-E kill prompt when they come close.
Civilians: core loop
- Choose your character with stats in mind — Eric has low athleticism and awful stamina, so beginners should avoid him; sturdier characters like Laurie take no damage squeezing through windows. Very low charisma makes phoning the police nearly useless.
- Set up your perk deck in the loadout screen: spend perk points to roll perks, equip good ones (stamina reducers like Unwound are excellent), scrap the junk. Equipped perks are the ones most likely to appear in your matches.
- Rescue the civilians: walk close to NPCs to reveal them on your minimap, convince them to follow you (press both mouse buttons at once), lead them away from Michael, then hide them in hide spots — hidden NPCs are much harder for Michael to find. Give spare weapons to NPCs with R.
- Learn the escapes: ground hatches, the car (repair kit + gas can + sedan key — then drive out of town), the police wagon (summoned by phone calls), the edge-of-map exit gate (bolt cutters or a padlock key), and storm cellars. Each exit only lets a few people through before it shuts off.
- Grab anti-grab items: a butterfly knife or ice pick lets you escape Michael's grab once (think a one-time decisive strike); an amulet saves you automatically when he grabs or hits you.
- Save yourself last — every civilian you save before escaping is more points for the team.
Items worth knowing
| Item | Effect |
|---|---|
| Bolt cutters | Open gated exits — reusable, so keep them |
| Butterfly knife / ice pick | Escape Michael's grab (one time each) |
| Amulet | Automatically saves you when grabbed or hit |
| Brass lantern | Slows Michael; reveals him while he's invisible |
| Flare gun / pocket knife | Blind or stun Michael |
| Repair kit / gas can / sedan key | Fix and fuel the car escape |
| Lock box code | Opens lock boxes, which usually contain weapons |
Small things that matter
- Fear interrupts your skill checks — witnessing deaths or being stalked builds it.
- Standing near a turned-on TV creates noise that confuses Michael; smoking a joint reveals nearby sounds.
- If the street lights flicker, Michael is invisible and moving through them.
- You can't damage Michael during his execution animation — shove instead, and don't waste ammo.
- If you die, you don't lose your XP: do spectator mini-games to feed perks to teammates, wait for the RNG police return, or come back guaranteed as Loomis once the radio is on.
