Halloween: The Game Survivor Guide — Escapes, Items and Priorities

Published 2026-09-179 min read

How to win as a Hero of Haddonfield: all five escape types and their unlock items, civilian-first priorities, the four stats, and every survival item explained.

Surviving Michael Myers is not about running first and thinking later. In Halloween: The Game, the win condition for the Heroes of Haddonfield has a clear order of operations: secure the NPC civilians first, then yourself. Collect the right items, unlock an escape route, walk every civilian out alive — that is a winning night in Haddonfield.

Win Condition and Escape Exits

Every match, your first job is to find the special civilians in the map and get them hiding safely. From there the loop is: gather items → unlock an escape → escort everyone out.

There are five escape exits, each holding up to 4 people per trip, each with its own unlock requirements:

  • Cellar — opens with a cellar key or bolt cutters. An axe is optional here, carry one only if you find it.
  • Gate — the strictest unlock: fuse + axe, plus a gate key or bolt cutters. All three parts, no substitutes.
  • Regular car — needs a car key and fuel. A repair kit's role in the car escape is not fully confirmed yet; treat it as optional.
  • Police car — currently unreliable: a known bug means it often will not drive out even when unlocked. The unlock chain itself: call the police from a phone, wait for Michael to kill the responding officer, then take the police car key he drops.
  • Police van — unlock conditions are still unverified; experiment.

There is also a final-chance timed escape — the last window of the match. It most likely opens once most civilians have escaped or died, sometimes after police discover a body. Calling different phone numbers frequently during the match seems to improve its trigger odds.

The Priority Order That Wins Matches

  1. Find and unlock an escape exit.
  2. Locate the scattered survivor NPCs.
  3. Collect the items those exits need.

Then handle civilians by type:

  • Normal civilians: order them to call the police, then keep searching for survivors and supplies.
  • Special civilians: order them to hide immediately — they are worth more and Michael hunts them harder — then continue looting.

The moment any exit opens, go back and walk your civilians to it. Escaping alone is a consolation prize, not a win.

Combat Rules: Never Brawl the Shape

Unless you are cornered with no other option, do not fight Michael head-on. Multiple civilians escaping outranks your own survival every time. The tools exist to buy seconds, not to win fights:

  • Flare gun and firecrackers briefly stun him — your escape window.
  • If Michael grabs you, mash the button prompt with a pocket knife or ice pick equipped to break free. The item is consumed on use.

Terrain matters too: never sprint through grass or fallen leaves — the noise pinpoints you, and Michael locks on fast.

One special case: the police playstyle ends matches outright. Deal enough damage to put Michael on the ground, complete the arrest minigame, and the match ends immediately in a win.

The Four Character Stats

Every survivor rolls four stats that shape how they handle a night in Haddonfield:

  • Melee — your strength in close-quarters fights.
  • Athleticism — movement speed and stamina pool; drives long chases and map traversal.
  • Composure — faster civilian interactions and faster police calls, plus resistance to fear.
  • Ingenuity — how well you repair, drive, and handle guns.

Every Survival Item, Grouped

Life-savers (grab-breakers):

  • Talisman — passive version of a knife break: auto-triggers on a grab, no prompt needed.
  • Pocket knife, butterfly knife, ice pick — mash to break a grab once, consumed after.

Control and distraction:

  • Flare gun / firecrackers — stun Michael; save them for chases and door blocks.
  • Road flare — blinds Michael and can call police support.
  • Flashlight — brief blind, useful mid-chase.
  • Smoke — reveals sound ripples: Michael's steps, survivor markers, noise pings. Best map awareness in an item.
  • Lantern — lights up Michael's live position on the map. See the purple items guide.

Utility and healing:

  • Bolt cutters — melee-capable and opens cellars, gates and loot boxes; the single most flexible key item.
  • Repair kit — fixes cars, breaker boxes; enables escape routes.
  • Hourglass — highlights escape items within 10 m while carried; thrown, it stuns. Also covered in the purple items guide.
  • Medical kit — three full heals, but you must stand still to use it.
  • Medical spray — one full heal you can use while being chased. The panic button.
  • Baseball / brick — basic throwables to interrupt and distract.
  • Beer — lowers fear but warps your vision; use with care.

Spend discipline is the real skill: control, break-free and heal items are match-winners only if they are still in your bag when the chase starts. Do not burn a flare gun on a quiet street.

And when you are the one holding the knife instead — that is the Michael guide. For turning all this escorting into levels, see the XP farming guide.
